What's Included in the Registry of Deeds?  Registry of Deeds Menu

The Registry of Deeds maintains records relevant to land ownership. Such records include conveyances, mortgages, release of mortgages and assignments. The records maintained relate to real estate in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador dating back to 1825. Documents are available for viewing in a broad range of formats, from digitally scanned images to original document books dating from 1825.

Registration provides notification that you claim an interest in a particular real property located in this Province. Ownership priority is based upon who first registers a valid interest in a property. This notice may be in the form of a deed of conveyance, a mortgage, a lien against the property, or other interests relating to land which are registered upon delivery to the Registry of Deeds.

The Registrar of Deeds ensures that all documents relating to real property submitted for registration are in proper legal form and are accurately recorded, indexed, and filed.

The Registry of Deeds is a public registry. This information is used daily by a host of clients who access our registry including: surveyors, lawyers, utility companies, financial institutions, search firms and general public. Staff are available during business hours to instruct our clients on searching title using the paper and electronic index. However, staff cannot perform the searches for clients. Searching title in Newfoundland and Labrador can be complex; therefore, clients are encouraged to seek the assistance of a professional search firm or lawyer.

From within the Registry of Deeds, clients can also access the Registry of Mechanic’s Liens. This registry permits the registration of a claim for lien against real property for work done or to be done, or materials placed or provided or to be placed on a particular property.

Also registered in the Registry of Deeds are conveyances, mortgages and notices relating to Condominium units.

This computer system, Companies and Deeds Online (CADO), offers access to index information for deeds registrations that have occurred since 1980.
